Mother We Won't Forsake You
One summer afternoon I watched as my toddler grandson was fully engrossed in the collection of dripping water into his blue plastic cup. Over again he carefully carried the filled cup, never spilling a drop to a tabletop two feet from him. We he arrived watched as the poured water fell over edges of the tabletop's base.
His careful study of water's properties is a hallmark of a toddler’s learning ability. At least one not distracted by screens. Later, when painting in my studio, I thought about the Chinese mythological understanding of snakes. They are considered intelligent, strategic and because they shed their skins they represent renewal Certainly grandchildren renew observant adults. They renew the spirit and hope of humans. They trust in our protection. But during this perilous time our protection requires more than car seats, healthy food and loving adults. Our protection requires that we demand a healthy environment for them. In large or small measures we must slow down our species' unrelenting march toward climatic catastrophe.
