Bad Education - "The Past Is Never Dead. It's Not Even Past"
William Faulkner once wrote, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” (Requiem for a Nun) Today’s conflicts and thorny issues are revealed through an understanding of the past. Meaning can be sought through text and identification. It is during the slow, physical process of painting my mind wanders. I imagine I am that child. It is a static image and yet it is full of potential associations based upon my research. That said, I choose subjects that explore today’s issues: racial tension, gun violence, and war in the Middle East. These paintings, both personal and universal, look at the past to help me find compassion and understanding in the present.
